How to Lose Weight (Non Boring Way)

I lost 100 lbs under a year and I didn’t even feel like I was on a diet. I enjoyed eating the same meals every single day and I was always looking forward to eating my next meal without ever getting bored.

I was able to lose weight and enjoy my life because of the principles I follow. I am going to show you the boring way of losing weight vs the fun way of losing weight (my principles).

Let’s dive in 👇

What is a boring way of losing weight?

A boring way of losing weight is forcing yourself to follow a nutrition plan that you can’t stick to for a long time.

Why?

Most people see weight loss as a short-term thing. They give up on their favorite foods and completely change their lifestyle so that they can lose weight in 3-6 months. This method is not sustainable. Even if you lose some weight you will still get back to your old habits if you are not enjoying the lifestyle and when you do go back.

Let me ask you this 👇

Would you like to go to the gym 6 times a week and eat broccoli, chicken breasts, and oats for the rest of your life? If you say yes, this is a boring way of losing weight and is not sustainable for many people.

When I was in my early 20’s, I forced myself to %100 clean diet, giving up on all my favorite foods. I would follow this diet for 2 months and one day I would take a bite from a chocolate cake or something else and this would trigger me to eat all the foods that I have been restricting myself.

I would eat all the foods I had restricted for the past 2 months and I would weigh myself the next day, see that my weight was up and I would tell myself “diet is not working, let me go back to normal eating to at least enjoy the life” I would eat normally for next couple of days, look myself in a mirror, feel guilt and I would convince myself to cut all the fav foods and go back to “healthy eating “ again.

I remember back in those days, this felt like a non-ending cycle and this was the reason for following a nutrition plan that I couldn’t sustain, aka “boring diet”

How to make weight loss fun?

Before I go into the fun ways of losing weight, let me tell you everything that I will be mentioning the exact things that helped me to lose 100 lbs under a year.

Don’t ignore your willpower

Willpower is a resource no one is talking about when it comes to losing weight.

Let me explain how willpower plays a crucial role in weight loss:

Suppose that you love eating chocolate and you have been eating it all your life. You decided to give up on chocolate because someone told you that eating chocolate is the reason why you can’t lose weight (funny but this stuff happens 🤭)

You decided to eliminate chocolate from your life and now following a very strict diet, completely stripped of your favorite foods.

Every time you see a chocolate you resist the to urge eat it. You are consuming willpower. One day your willpower will deplete and you won’t be able to resist. You will start eating chocolate and a lot of it and you will weigh yourself the next day see that your weight is up by several kilos (water retention) and you will think that weight loss is not working for you because:

  • You are 30+ and your metabolism is not working

  • You don’t have time to exercise

  • You have stubborn fat and can’t lose it

(All of them are horrible excuses )

What should you do?

Instead of depleting your willpower, you can have your favorite foods daily as long as you are still in a calorie deficit and most of your diet consists of clean foods .

Volume eating

Volume eating focuses on consuming large quantities of low-calorie, nutrient-dense foods to achieve satiety while managing calorie intake. The idea here is you consume a large portion of food to satisfy your hunger while not consuming a lot of calories

It's all about filling up your plate (and your stomach) with foods that won't break the calorie bank. Think crunchy veggies, juicy fruits, and lean proteins that'll keep you full without making you feel like you need to loosen your belt.

Instead of tiny, unsatisfying portions that leave you hungry an hour later, volume eating lets you pile your plate high with foods that'll keep you feeling full and satisfied.

I gotta be honest though most volume foods that fall under “low-calorie high volume” are pretty boring, but you can always make it fun.

This is my fav snack for volume eating. Frozen chocolate berries (170 kcals for the whole thing)

Some of my fav foods:

  • Berries

  • Melon

  • Shrimps

  • Cauliflower rice

You can always mix these foods with spices, sugar-free syrups, or protein powder to make it delicious or you can consume it as it is but I find this boring!

Bye-bye to bird-size portions

Eat small portions several times a day to keep the metabolism active. I am sure you heard of this advice.

I hate small portions for two reasons:

  • makes me feel like I am on a diet

  • I never feel full

  • I am busy and I don’t have time to think about when to eat to what to eat

If you are like me and you agree with everything I said above, you should try intermittent fasting and eating 1-2 big meals a day.

I eat my first meals 5-6 hours after waking up and I will start a day with a black coffee to feel energized and also to suppress my appetite. My first meal is usually a source of lean protein and a simple treat such as Rice Krispies. I consume my largest meal around dinner time to feel very full.

If I don’t feel full, I feel like I am on a diet and I don’t like to have this mentality. Eating 1-2 big portions allows me to be more flexible with my social life too. Suppose that I have 2000 calories left for my dinner and I can easily go out with family and friends for a burger or a steak dinner.

If I only had 250 calories left because I already had several meals, I would still go to the same dinner but watch people binge on nice foods while I have green tea and lettuce (yikes).
